The author selects more than 100 representative Chinese architects from mainland. They are divided
into four generations according to their different social backgrounds, educational experiences and
ages. The first generation was born from late Qing Dynasty till 1911. Most of them stepped onto the
stage of architecture from late 1920s to early 1930s, and all of them received their education
abroad. The second generation was born from the early 20th century to 1920s, and graduated from
universities before 1949, only seldom studied overseas. The third generation was born in the period
of 1930s-1940s, and graduated from universities after 1949. They grew up in war time: 1937-1945 and
1946-1949, and experienced the "Culture Revolution" (1960s- 1970s). The fourth generation was born
after 1949, and received university education after "Reform and Opening" policy operated.
